9 values

Our girls are doing at unit for school at the moment based on the nine national values for schools. The unit is
"meant to be a guide and exploration of our national values, and are intended to enhance home and classroom environments that are caring and supportive".*
The nine values are:
  • Care and Compassion
  • Doing Your Best
  • Fair Go
  • Freedom
  • Honesty and Trustworthiness
  • Integrity
  • Respect
  • Responsibility
  • Understanding, Tolerance and Inclusion.
The school has chosen five to focus on, and we'll be working through those (in bold) over the next few weeks.

It's helpful to have national values so clearly defined like this!   Some are so typically Australian and others are interestingly absent.  Some I read and think "hurrah" and others I wonder what they acutally mean.  I'm looking forward to working through them with our girls, particularly discussing how we decide what a value is and whether it is positive or negative, and what we would do if we disagree.

I'd appreciate your input as we work through this unit.  What do you think?  What would you discuss with your young children?  How would you point them to God?

I always find the value "fair go" interesting. It's such an obvious "Australian" value. It's funny how a lot of these values can be found in Christianity and there are many examples in the value. I often talk to my students about "values" (the verb and the noun). Asking them to articulate what a person, text, composer, etc. value, how we know their values, etc., can be quite challenging for them.

Haven't a lot of spare time to think about this, just at the moment, but I'm guessing it'd be good to first try to help the girls understand these values by doing a role play with the girls that helps them understand & "get" the value, then together start looking out for real life examples of people "doing" these values, or the opposite of the value!?

Maybe looking to see if you can find examples of people in the Bible living out any of these values?
Maybe a good time to look at the Fruits of the Spirit & the character of our God who gives us his Spirit?
